This material is part of the Early Childhood Montessori language arts curriculum. Figure/Ground is a pre-reading skill exercise that helps children make sense of their environment, understand language, and use language. Visual perception skills allow children to understand the objects and forms she sees in her daily sensory experiences. The ability to perceive differences in the shapes of letters is the foundation of learning written language. The material consists of two sets of cards: figure (black objects in the foreground) and ground (black background).
