Description

This material supports the Montessori biology curriculum. Children learn about plant cells, their characteristics, and functions as part of their ongoing study of botany. All plants are eukaryotes as they are composed of eukaryotic cells. However, not all eukaryotes have the same characteristics as plant cells. By studying The Plant Cell, children understand what makes plant cells particularly different from other eukaryotic cells. The material also prepares children to understand biological classification, and to distinguish different types of cells. This material consists of 54 three-part cards, two booklets, and two wallcharts. The three-part nomenclature cards introduce children to the various characteristics and functions of a plant cell. The parts described are: cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, cytosol, cytoskeleton, organelles, mitochondria, ribosomes, rough endoplasmic, reticulum, smooth endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi Apparatus, vacuole, plastids, nucleus, nuclear envelope, nucleolus, and chromatin. The nomenclature cards contain a description, a label, and a picture card for matching purposes. The two wallcharts represent all the parts together. The booklets serve as control for error for the nomenclature matching work.
