Description

This material is a staple of the Montessori language curriculum for the elementary level. Children survey an array of label cards that provide experience with building compound words and those with prefixes and suffixes. Developing morphological awareness prepares children to become better readers and writers. Children who explicitly learn to identify and manipulate the smallest parts of a word are invited to use higher cognitive functions, which will enhance their literacy skills. This material is introduced through a series of Key Experiences provided in the corresponding manual Language Arts Volume 3 Elementary Level I. Word Study Set #1 is stored in a storage solution, and is available to children during their entire career in the elementary classroom. It is revisited each year between ages 6-9 and used in parallel to Set #3 and Set #4. Most of the material is practiced by children independently as the Key Experiences are introduced. The material consists of 900+ cards with 60 activities.
