Description

This material is part of the Montessori geography curriculum for the elementary level. A primary level version is first introduced as a means to develop the concept of whole to parts using nomenclature cards. At the elementary level, Parts of a Flag serves as a concrete representation for countries as children learn better from a concrete approach to abstract concepts such as political geography. Parts of a Flag is the first level of a three level sequence. Activities with the flags may be divided into three levels:
Level I: Flag Parts – Classified Nomenclature for parts, simple nomenclature for the flags of continents
Level II: Flags in Relationship to Geography – Pin Maps
Level III: Flags of each country – Meaning, traditions and customs of flags

Parts of a Flag is reintroduce in geography before studying flags of the world. The parts depicted are: the flag, the field, the canton, the fly, the hoist, the heading, the grommets, the staff, the finial, the truck, the halyard, and the halyard cleat. The material consists of 10 sets of three-part nomenclature cards that contain a description, a label, and a picture card for matching purposes. There is one wallchart representing all the parts together. The booklet serves as control for error for the nomenclature matching work.
